The car is the biggest part of it, and the part most people improvise. A loose dog in the footwell is a distraction for you and a real risk for them if you have to stop hard.

One practical note on boots. Most dogs hate them at first, so put them on indoors for a few minutes at a time with treats before the first real walk, or you will spend that walk carrying your dog. Life jackets are worth having even for strong swimmers, because cold water and currents tire a dog far faster than owners expect.
