  • Treats go in beside them: he has to work the carrot out before he gets to the food

He comes home from an hour outside and twenty minutes later he's pacing the hallway again. The walk emptied his legs and left his head untouched. Sniffing is what settles a dog, and that's the part a walk doesn't reach.

A carrot snuffle mat gives his nose the job. Twelve plush carrots are planted in a felt vegetable patch with treats hidden underneath, and he has to work each one out to get at the food.

What makes the snuffle mat work:

  • Twelve carrots, twelve holes: each one pushes into its own pocket, so there are twelve small problems to solve, not one
  • Treats go in beside them: he has to work the carrot out before he gets to the food
  • Every carrot squeaks: the moment it stops being a food puzzle and becomes a toy
  • Non-slip underside: it stays put on a wooden floor while he shoves at it
  • Zip-off cover: when the whole thing smells of liver treats, it goes in the machine

Hand holding small dog treats over the Noblias carrot snuffle mat ready to hide them among the carrots.

Hide the food, then let him get to work. Push a few treats down beside the carrots and the work starts. A few minutes of this works him in a way running doesn't, because it's his nose doing the work rather than his legs.

Pomeranian holding a plush carrot in its mouth beside the Noblias snuffle mat with an empty hole left behind.

One carrot at a time. Each one sits tight enough in its hole that he has to work out how to get it free, by pulling, pawing or lifting, before the treat underneath is his.

Noblias carrot snuffle mat shown as a 13-in-1 hide and seek squeaky toy with 12 carrots and one mat, machine washable.

Thirteen pieces, not one flat mat. Twelve carrots and the patch they sit in, so it works as a foraging puzzle, a squeaky toy and a plain scatter mat depending on how much of it you leave in.

Features of the Noblias carrot snuffle mat: soft cotton plush, zippered detachable cover and a non-slip bottom.

It grips the floor and comes apart. The textured underside keeps the mat from sliding while he pushes at it, and the cover unzips off the padding when it needs a wash.
